McKenzie Powell has a lot to smile about.
The Eastside High School senior softball player signed with Gordon State College Tuesday in front of teammates, friends, family and coaches.
“I’m very excited to start a new chapter in my life,” Powell said, as she smiled ear to ear following the signing.
The shortstop finished the 2015 season with 21 hits on 56 at bats, 12 RBIs and a .537 slugging percentage, but according to Eastside coach Heather Wood, Powell’s character off the softball field is what makes her a steal for Gordon State.
“She shows tremendous leadership,” Wood said. “She’s very athletic. She is smart and knows the game, and she’s an all-around versatile player. I think she’ll contribute all of those things at the college level.”
Powell said she hopes to get a good education while doing something she loves, and the Eastside community stands behind her.
“The entire program is excited for her, and we know she’s going to go on and have a great future at Gordon State. She’s been an asset to our program here for the past four years, so we wish her nothing but the best.”
