Proposed House districts

Rockdale County would have six House districts and keep its current two Senate districts under the proposed redrawn maps for Georgia House and Senate districts.

Currently, the county has four House Districts: 92, 93, 94, 95, which are filled by District 92 Rep. Pamela Stephenson (D-Decatur), District 93 Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler (D-Lithonia), District 94 Rep. Dar'shun Kendrick (D-Lithonia), District 95 Rep. Pamela Dickerson (D-Conyers).

In the new House district map, Rockdale would have six House districts: 90, 91, 92, 109, 113, 114.

District 114 would run through the top quarter of Rockdale – where District 95 runs through currently – and western portion of Walton County. District 92 would run through the middle slice of Rockdale, including much of the city of Conyers, where District 94 runs through currently. District 91 would run through the quarter of Rockdale south of I-20, where District 93 runs through currently. District 90 would take up the “toe” in the boot-shape of Rockdale, where District 92 runs currently, and run into part of Stockbridge in Henry County. District 109 would take up the “heel” in the Rockdale boot-shape and would run into Henry and Newton counties.

Currently, the county has Senate Districts 43, filled by Sen. Ronald Ramsey (D-Decatur), and District 17, filled by Sen. Rick Jeffares (R-Locust Grove).

In the new Senate district map, Rockdale would still be covered by most of District 43, which would also run into DeKalb County and the western quarter of Newton County. District 17 would also still be in Rockdale County and would expand to cover the “heel” and the “toe” of Rockdale.

During reapportionment town hall meetings, Rockdale residents had repeatedly requested a state Representative with a majority territory in Rockdale.

The Georgia House and Senate approved the redrawn district maps, which were released last Friday, in votes on Thursday that fell along partisan lines.

The House voted 108-64 in favor of its map, and the Senate approved its map by a vote of 35-18. It is the first time in Georgia that Republicans have controlled the redistricting process from start to finish.

The plans pit 20 House members against fellow incumbents from the same party and place two Democratic senators in one district. Four of the House pairings are in Republican districts in south Georgia. Six pairings set up House Democratic matchups in metro Atlanta.

Both chambers now must approve each other's maps, before the plans head to Gov. Nathan Deal for his signature. The chambers' typically defer to each other to draw their own maps and pass them without changes. Lawmakers return Monday.
