The thought of having a gazebo built on the square is interesting.

The Covington City Council discussed that possibility this past week and reviewed the possible costs of the project, which could total $55,000.

A vote was expected to approve the building of the gazebo after council discussions, but Councilman Chris Smith convinced the council to wait to get more information.

We agree with Smith’s take.

Before we have the city or Main Street Covington put any tax money into this project we suggest that efforts be made, perhaps through our major civic clubs, to conduct a community wide fundraiser to build the gazebo. Not only would it save the city tens of thousands of dollars but the effort and structure would mean much more if it was built through the efforts of the community.

If that doesn’t work, maybe someone might step forth and build the gazebo in honor of a member of their family or another deserving community member.

The point is that we don’t have to throw tax money after projects like this. In what we think of as the good old days, it was a matter of community pride to build such things. There is no reason why we can’t have some of that community pride now in building a gazebo for a town square that all of us are proud of.
