Mrs. Evelyn Mathis Durden, 89, died June 5. The daughter of the late Fred Mathis and Lottie Mae Evens, she was born in 1922 in Rutledge. She attended Morgan County public schools and joined Greater Moses Baptist Church at an early age and became a faithful member. She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Nebuchadnezzar Durden Sr., daughter Ms. Teresha Durden Smith, four aunts and one uncle. Mrs. Durden was very outspoken and an exquisite cook. She loved fishing and had a passion for gardening. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a joy to be around.
Surviving are children Mr. and Mrs. Nebuchadnezzar (Mary) Durden Jr., Ms. Freddie Mae Durden, Ms. Annie Lee Durden Carr, Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Durden, Mrs. Mozeli (Marshall) Parks Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Terry (Phyllis) Durden, Mr. Perry Durden, Mr. Rickey Durden; 36 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends; special friend and son Mr. Cornelius Abraham (Ham) Turner.
Funeral services were held June 9 at Greater Moses Baptist Church, Rutledge, with Pastor Joseph Williams Sr., officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
