Mr. Darrell N. Henderson died June 8. The son of the late Spencer and Salema Henderson, he was born in Covington in 1938, the third of five children. He graduated from Washington Street High School and Fort Valley State University. He taught in Forsyth County and pursued additional education from Clark Atlanta University. He then worked as a Pricing Analyst with Union Oil Company.
He then had a 17-year career with the Newton County Sheriff's Department. In retirement, he had a passion for landscaping, resulting in a well-manicured lawn, and an interest in restoring old cars. Mr. Henderson joined Grace United Methodist Church at an early age and served as church treasurer for nine years and was an active member until his health declined. Mr. Henderson was an advocate for voter registration and received the Newton County NAACP President's Award in 1996. He believed knowledge was one of the keys to success and encouraged family and friends to strive for higher levels of education.
Surviving are wife of 25 years, Rosetta Graham Henderson; children Sherrell D'Edna Henderson, Denise (Seranta) Alvaloy, Rodney (Heather) Henderson; grandchildren Geherig, Denisha, April, Akasha, Leia and Brielle; brothers Oliver (Mary) Henderson, David (Edith) Wise; aunts Mrs. Gladys Brow, Mrs. Willie Cody, Mrs. Ella Ruth Jones; eight sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; a host of other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held June 12 at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Matt Murphy, the Rev. Thomas Stegsll, the Rev. Marie Davis and the Rev. Jeffrey Callahan officiating. Interment followed at Lawnwood Memorial Park.
