UPDATE: Covington man killed in school bus crash

UPDATE March 14, 10:30 a.m.: A 53-year-old Covington man was killed Monday afternoon in a traffic accident involving a Newton County Board of Education school bus and a Nissan Maxima.

According to a press release from Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Investigator Jeff Alexander, at around 4:30 p.m. March 13, Mark Griffin reportedly attempted to turn left onto Brown Bridge Road from Christian Road. According to the release, he turned directly in front of the oncoming school bus.

According to the release, Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene by Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis.

There were reportedly only two children with minor injuries on the school bus. According to the release, their injuries were treated at the scene and the children were released to their families.

The accident is being worked jointly by the NCSO and the Georgia State Patrol, according to the release.

Monday afternoon, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Newton County School System (NCSS) school bus #20-94, from Route 311, collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Brown Bridge Road and Christian Road.

All 26 students on board have been checked at the scene and three received treatment for minor injuries.

According to a NCSS press release, the students are being transported back to Veterans Memorial Middle School at this time to be released to parents or subsequently transported home.
