SAVANNAH (AP) - Authorities credit a cane-wielding 71-year-old woman with scaring away two men suspected of trying to break into her Effingham County home.

The Savannah Morning News reports that the woman woke up to find someone knocking on her door and then heard glass breaking at her Goshen Road residence Wednesday morning.

Effingham County sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor said the woman grabbed her cane and went after the two suspects she saw trying to break in.

Ehsanipoor said she managed to chase them away.

Authorities say it appeared the suspects used a shovel they found in the woman's back yard to break the glass in the home's back door.
