ATLANTA (AP) - Mayor Kasim Reed will open Atlanta's first public electric vehicle charging station at Atlantic Station.

The charging station will be located across from Atlantic Station's Millennium Gate. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says (http://bit.ly/oI3els) it will be powered by overhead solar panels and will be available to motorists with electric powered, zero-emissions vehicles 24 hours a day.

Reed will take part in the ceremony on Wednesday, and the charging station will be available beginning Thursday.

Atlantic Station was built in midtown Atlanta on the site of an abandoned steel mill and is one of the largest brown-field reclamation projects in the U.S. Its charging station will be able to charge a Chevrolet Volt or Nissan Leaf in three to seven hours.
