TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — City officials on Tybee Island are having second thoughts about plans to install computer-linked cameras that would read and record the license plates of every car and truck coming onto the island.

The Tybee city council scheduled a special meeting Monday afternoon to reconsider its November vote to spend nearly $29,000 on the license-plate scanners. Mayor Jason Buelterman (BELL-tuhr-man) and other city officials say they've been bombarded by email complaining that the scanners would invade the privacy of residents and tourists alike.

Buelterman says city officials wanted the scanners to gather information on how many beach tourists come to Tybee, where they come from and how long they stay.

A growing number of U.S. cities coast-to-coast are installing car-tag scanners, mostly for use by law enforcement.
