Storms to bring potential tornadoes, heavy rain

ATLANTA (AP) — Forecasters expect damaging winds of up to 60 mph as a line of strong to severe thunderstorms moves across Georgia late Monday/early Tuesday.

In addition, Newton, Rockdale and surrounding counties are under a hazardous weather outlook throughout Monday and into Monday evening.

Early Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service in Peachtree City also predicts very heavy rain of up to three inches and isolated, brief tornadoes.

The weather service projects that the storms will arrive in the Rome, Carrollton and Columbus areas between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Tuesday, then hit the Atlanta area between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

With Chris Carr already having announced his intention to run for governor in 2026, that will leave his Attorney General seat open. One elected official with Newton County ties has said he is looking at entering the Republican primary for attorney general next week.
