ATLANTA (AP) — Thunderstorms spawned intense lightning and powerful winds across Georgia, sparking house fires in suburban Atlanta and toppling trees and power lines in several counties.
Heavy rains Thursday also flooded several lanes of Interstate 20 in Atlanta, leading to traffic jams during the evening rush hour.
There were several reports to the National Weather Service of trees and power lines down. Emergency managers and police told the weather service that trees were blown down in Fulton, Forsyth, Hall, Cherokee, Bibb, Houston and Wilkinson counties.
In Bonaire, south of Macon, law officers reported that a tree and live power lines fell onto a vehicle, trapping the occupant after 6 p.m. Thursday. No serious injuries were reported.
Northeast of Dublin, high winds blew a mobile home off its cinder blocks and damaged several buildings.
