SPARTA, Ga. (AP) - A Sparta police officer has been arrested after authorities say he was involved in dogfighting.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says 33-year-old Travis T. Edwards was arrested Monday and charged with dogfighting and cruelty to animals. The GBI says the investigation began Thursday at the request of Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright.

The GBI says investigators executing a search warrant at Edwards' home in Sparta found and confiscated several pit bulls.

Another man, 42-year-old Reginald Rayshon Shivers of Milledgeville, was arrested on the same charges.

It was not immediately clear whether either man had a lawyer.
