SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A government official in coastal Georgia is proposing to rename a county courthouse after a former state lawmaker, the late J. Tom Coleman Jr.

Chatham County Commission Chairman Al Scott introduced the idea to fellow commissioners, none of whom raised any immediate objections.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1rP1REr) that the proposal is for the Chatham County Courthouse Judicial Center in Savannah, which is known locally as the Montgomery Street courthouse.

Scott, who served in the Georgia General Assembly with Coleman, said Coleman was largely responsible for construction of the courthouse. It was Coleman, he said, who put the construction of the courthouse on the ballot in the 1970s, not long after voters had rejected a plan to finance it with bonds.

On June 4, Coleman died at age 85.
