EAST POINT, Ga. (AP) — The mother of a young child who was reported missing and later found safe is now accused of giving police false information.

East Point police say 28-year-old Cyndi Cuffie was being held in the East Point Jail on a felony charge of making false statements to police. It wasn't known early Wednesday whether Cuffie has an attorney.

Investigators say Cuffie told them her 3-year-old daughter, Kamile Shorter, disappeared from the 1400 block of Elizabeth Lane around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Police said Kamile was found safe later Tuesday evening. She has been placed in state custody.

East Point police Lt. Cliff Chandler tells WSB-TV  that investigators believe the incident is a hoax perpetrated by the mother. Authorities haven't commented on a possible reason as to why police say they were misled.
