STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) — A new president has been named to take the helm of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on Wednesday named Jaimie Hebert president. He will step into his new role on July 1.

Hebert comes to Statesboro from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, where he has been provost and vice president for academic affairs. He's been there since 1999 and also served in other roles, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

He has also worked as an assistant professor of mathematical sciences at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Hebert has a bachelor's degree, master's and a doctorate in statistics from the University of Louisiana-Lafyette.
