ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say jailers overlooked a gun on a suspect as they booked him into the Clarke County Jail in northeast Georgia.
Clarke County sheriff's Capt. Eric Pozen says the .38-caliber revolver was found by deputies Friday night in a holding cell in the jail's booking area. The weapon was unloaded.
Pozen tells The Athens Banner-Herald that the arresting officer failed to find the pistol at the time of the arrest, and a deputy didn't locate it when performing a frisk search.
The incident marks the third security lapse at the jail this year.
In January, a man got into a secure area of the jail by telling a deputy he was a former police officer and had the sheriff's permission to observe bond hearings.
