EATONTON (AP) - Authorities say the iconic Br'er Rabbit statue has been stolen from the grounds of the Uncle Remus Museum in the central Georgia town of Eatonton.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says the 3-foot-tall iron statue was taken Sunday night. He says someone stole the statue, which weighs 250 pounds, but left the granite base.

The sheriff says the statue is a much-loved landmark in the county, and authorities would very much like to have it back.

Br'er rabbit is a character in the collection of Uncle Remus stories by author Joel Chandler Harris, an Eatonton native.
