LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Gwinnett County mother is fighting flesh-eating bacteria.

WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/1KJJPyG ) reported Thursday 34-year-old Cindy Martinez is at Gwinnett County Medical Center at risk of having her hands and feet removed. She was hospitalized May 25. Martinez is the mother of two small children and is a former Marine. Her husband, David, is a Gwinnett County police officer.

Doctors have not figured out how she contracted the dangerous bacteria yet. David Martinez told the station the illness started as a small pain in her shoulder.

The bacteria have already forced doctors to surgically remove dead muscle and tissue.

Doctors say the flesh-eating bacteria, called necrotizing fasciitis, come from some kind of open wound.
