EUHARLEE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a small town police chief and assistant chief in northwest Georgia have been charged with stealing government funds and violating their oaths of office.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Euharlee police Chief Terry Harget and Assistant Chief Richard Smith were employed by the county school system as crossing guards in an off-duty capacity.

The GBI says an investigation revealed the two were being paid for the off-duty job while also receiving on-duty pay from the city. The GBI says the chief also had on-duty officers doing crossing guard duty for which he was being paid.

The GBI says both men turned themselves in at the county jail Thursday.

It was not immediately clear whether bond was granted or whether either man had a lawyer.
