Ga. officials recommend checking smoke alarms

ATLANTA (AP) — State officials say Georgians should use this weekend's time change as a reminder to change smoke alarm batteries.

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens says the annual change is a good time to make sure your smoke alarm works as it should. Hudgens says there were 91 fatal home fires last year, and 43 of those homes did not have working alarms.

Officials also recommend cleaning dust from smoke alarms.

The state says 60 people have died this year in residential fires. Clocks should be set back one hour to standard time on Sunday.
