ATLANTA (AP) — The state ethics commission has dismissed a complaint accusing Democratic candidate for governor Jason Carter of violating state law by sending fundraiser invitations during the legislative session.
The commission responded to former state Sen. John Douglas in a Sept. 25 letter, saying that the complaint was rejected because Carter didn't solicit donations for his own campaign against Gov. Nathan Deal.
State Sen. Carter sent invitations for a New York fundraiser and cocktail reception to benefit the Democratic Party of Georgia's Victory 2014 fund.
The ethics commission says state lawmakers are prohibited from soliciting donations for their own campaigns during the legislative session. However, the commission says members of the general assembly are free to solicit campaign funding for political parties or non-candidate campaign committees.
