Newton man dies after being struck by school bus

Charles Petersen, of Oxford, died after being struck by a school bus on Hwy. 278, at the intersection of Alcovy Road, around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.

According to a report by the Covington Police Department, the 45-year-old man was on his bicycle traveling west on the sidewalk of Hwy. 278 westbound. The school bus was traveling east on Hwy. 278, turning left onto Alcovy Road.

Petersen was struck by the school bus after entering onto the crosswalk, according to reports.

He sustained traumatic injuries, was unresponsive when emergency personnel arrived and was taken to Piedmont Newton, where he was pronounced deceased.

Petersen was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Newton Piedmont at 7:57 a.m. The accident has been turned over to Georgia State Patrol for further investigation.

According to a Newton County School System (NCSS) report, the bus involved was No. 28-20.

"Per school system policy, the driver of the bus will submit to drug and alcohol tests," NCSS Director of Public Relations, Sherri Davis-Viniard said.
