Newton County Theme School’s new dance team has been making strides in its first season.
The dancers’ season started in August as they learned choreography and trained with their coach Jessica Tamburro, a sixth-grade science teacher at NCTS.
Ten students were selected for the team, and the girls prepared a hip-hop and a pom routine for their first competition in January.
The dance team competed at the University of Georgia’s Red Hotz Dance Team Invitational, bringing home first place in pom and second place in hip-hop.
The dance team followed up its inaugural performance with a first-place hip-hop finish and a third-place pom finish at the Kennesaw State University Dance Team Invitational.
The NCTS dance team wrapped a third-place finish in both hip-hop and pom at the Universal Dance Association’s Georgia State Dance Championship, competing against teams from Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.
