A Thanksgiving tradition will continue at Newton County Theme School at Ficquett as the Newton County Board of Education approved the use of the building for a local organization’s Thanksgiving dinner.
The Board unanimously approved letting the Newton County Ministers Union use the school’s cafeteria for its annual Community Thanksgiving meal. According to school system officials, the school system has been granting the use of the school cafeteria and waiving the fee for the past 12 years.
The 25th annual community Thanksgiving dinner will offer a free hot meal to the less fortunate and senior citizens from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the theme school, 2207 Williams St., Covington.
In other BOE news, the Board also approved use of the old Newton High School’s track and field facility by Dynamic Speed Elite Track Club. The club will pay $2,700 to use the facilities to train for AAU and USA Jr. Olympics competitions.
