School board approves budget timeline

Newton County School Superintendent Dr. Gary Mathews has released a list of potential cuts to the system’s budget and the Newton County Board of Education has unanimously approved a timeline that would have a final budget set by June 14.

Due to a week’s worth of inclement weather, the tentative list of budget cuts was not released on the original date planned. Mathews released them Tuesday afternoon, hours before the combined work session/board meeting.

Principals – all of whom were in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting – have been given the list of proposed cuts and the amount each cut would save the school system. They are required to have their completed budget requests for furniture, maintenance and other requests in by Friday.

The tentative Fiscal Year 2012 budget reductions are scheduled to be released in March with the tentative release to board members scheduled for May 10. Work sessions will be held by the board as needed May 11-16 and a tentative budget is set to be adopted May 17 with the final budget and millage rate decided June 14.
