A Newton County deputy remains on administrative leave after an accident Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a Covington woman.

According to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Lt. Paul Cosper, the deputy was on his way to work in his patrol vehicle when the victim, 36-year-old Paula Dobbs, reportedly pulled out of Rocky Creek Road and directly into the path of the deputy.

"She failed to yield," he said, adding that he does not expect charges to be filed against the deputy.

The accident occurred at around 3 p.m. on County Line Road just inside the Jasper County line. The Madison branch of the GSP is in charge of the investigation with assistance from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was treated and released at an area hospital.
