Two found dead in Newton home Tuesday in possible murder/suicide

COVINGTON, Ga. - The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is investigating two people found dead Tuesday evening at a Highway 142 home.

Around 6 p.m. the sheriff’s office was dispatched to 11660 Ga. Highway 142 around 6:12 p.m. reporting a person shot at the location, according to a news release from NCSO Public Information Officer Michael Cunningham. When deputies arrived, they found Oscar Goggins, 72, and Elizabeth Goggins, 63, had been shot.

According to the release, both of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

“Early indications lead to an apparent murder/suicide,” according to the release.

 Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of death and manner of death.

“The investigation is fluid and ongoing,” according to the release.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis did not immediately respond to phone calls or email messages requesting more information.
