COVINGTON, Ga. – A man and woman from Oxford were arrested early Thursday after a traffic stop for a non-working tag light turned up a warrant and drugs.

According to a Covington Police Department (CPD) report, Officer Matt Holbrook was patrolling the area of Hwy-278 and West Street at 1:30 a.m. April 6 when he was passed by a black Dodge Dakota truck that did not have a working tag light.

According to the report, Holbrook stopped the vehicle at West Street and Emory Street and approached it to make contact with the driver, identified as Michael Waldrip, 47.  As he spoke to Waldrip, the officer reportedly noticed a see through orange container that appeared to contain marijuana next to the passenger’s leg.

According to the report, when Holbrook asked if it was marijuana, the passenger, identified as Sherry Pratt, 43, grabbed the container and attempted to put it in her purse. She handed it over to the officer when told to do so and Holbrook was reportedly able to see that it did contain marijuana.

When asked for his driver’s license, Waldrip reportedly said he didn’t have one. According to the report, when Holbrook checked Waldrip’s name and birth date, the dispatcher informed him that Waldrip had a suspended license and a warrant out of Douglas County.

After placing Waldrip under arrest, Holbrook returned to the vehicle and asked Pratt to step out. According to the report, as she was exiting the vehicle, Holbrook noticed a glass smoking pipe in plain view on the floorboard behind the seat. While searching the vehicle, Holbrook found a cigarette pack which reportedly contained a bag of methamphetamine next to the glass pipe. According to the report, there was also a wooden smoking pipe that appeared to have marijuana residue in it.

According to the report, Waldrip was arrested on the warrant. Additionally, he was charged with a tag light violation, driving on a suspended license, possession of drug related objects, possession of marijuana less than an ounce and possession of methamphetamine. Pratt was arrested and charged with possession of drug-related objects, possession of marijuana less than an ounce and possession of methamphetamine.
