Covington-crime

An Oxford man was arrested by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) after a traffic stop and driver’s license check led to a vehicle search that turned up drugs.

According to a NCSO report, shortly after 10:30 p.m. March 2, William Mark Lewis, 31, was stopped for speeding on Highway 81. A check of his drivers’ license came back showing that the license was suspended. When Lewis stepped out of his vehicle, NCSO Deputy Andrew Archie reportedly detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car.

According to the NCSO, during the search Archie found a cigarette box which contained a clear bag with a green leafy substance. He also found pills in the vehicle.

According to the report, Lewis was arrested and charged with possession of a schedule IV narcotic, driving while license suspended, pills not in original container, possession of less than an oz. of marijuana and possession of a schedule II narcotic. He was transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center.
