COVINGTON, Ga. -A local school bus was involved in a hit and run accident Friday afternoon on State Route 142 in Covington. There were reportedly no children on the bus at the time of the crash and no injuries were reported, according to a statement from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
The bus was traveling east on State Route 142, in stop-and-go traffic because of a backup from a four-way intersection when it was struck in the rear by a small, brown Chevrolet sedan, according to the statement.
"After the crash, the driver of the mentioned sedan turned around and fled in the opposite direction," GSP reported.
A witness provided a tag number, but it did not match up with the described vehicle. The fleeing driver was described as a white male with facial hair.
Hit and run crashes remain open until there is further evidence brought forward that will lead to a successful conclusion, according to the GSP. Post 46 in Monroe can be contacted at 770-464-1800 if further witness information can be provided.
