COVINGTON, Ga. - A 56-year-old Covington man was pronounced deceased after being struck by a car on Highway 278 Sunday evening.

Around 9:30 p.m., Georgia State Patrol (GSP) responded to reports of a pedestrian being hit. According to the GSP traffic crash report, an Isuzu Trooper SUV was traveling east on Highway 278 approaching the intersection of Elm Street.

The pedestrian, identified as Michael Stanley Christian, was attempting to cross from the north shoulder of Highway 278 and was in the left turn lane at the time of the accident.

The Isuzu struck the pedestrian in the turn lane on the right side of his body.

“The pedestrian then traveled approximately 91 feet before coming to rest on the white line between the left turn lane to Elm Street and the left travel lane of Georgia 12 (Highway 278),” according to the report. “The pedestrian’s left shoe was approximately 5 feet in the travel lane of Georgia 12 (Highway 278) while the right shoe was on the white line in between both lanes.

“The pedestrian had a brown leather jacket on that was approximately 90 feet from where the pedestrian came to rest. The jacket came to rest approximately 3 feet over the stop bar for the left turn lane to Elm Street.”

Christian was transported to Piedmont Newton Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 10:17 p.m., according to the report.

Witnesses reportedly told GSP they noticed Christian crossing the street from the Ross parking lot before he was struck. The Isuzu driver reportedly told GSP he was driving down the road when he hit an unknown object and pulled into a nearby parking lot. He then exited his vehicle and saw someone laying in the road.
