COVINGTON, Ga. – Investigators with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office are looking for the person or people responsible for throwing four Molotov cocktails at a Covington house Sunday afternoon.

According to reports, deputies and Newton County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the house on Walnut Ridge Court around 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26 on a report of a structure fire. On arrival, according to their report,  firefighters found smoldering pine straw outside of the house and a small amount of smoke coming from the eaves of the house.

After getting no answer at the door, firefighters forced entry into the house. Once inside, they used a thermal imaging camera to check for extension of the fire and hidden fire. They determined the fire was contained to the outside of the residence. The smoke reportedly had entered the house through the vents in the laundry room.a

According to a NCSO incident report, somebody threw four glass soft drink bottles with paper and an unknown liquid on the house. The items reportedly burned the grass and wires to the house along the side of the house by the garage.

NCFR Captain Robert Thomas said only one of the glass containers broke. He said the liquid is being analyzed.

Most of the fire was reportedly extinguished by a passerby using a garden hose who saw the fire and stopped to notify the resident.
