Deputy airlifted to Atlanta hospital after being struck with bottle, kicked

COVINGTON, Ga. – A Newton County Sheriff’s Office deputy was airlifted to WellStar Atlanta Medical Center on Saturday evening after being hit, kicked and struck in the side of the neck with a bottle while responding to a report of a suicide attempt.

According to a press release from Newton County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deputy LaTavia Washington, the deputy was injured after responding to the report on Five Oaks Drive at about 9 p.m. July 7.

Other deputies arrived at the scene and the suspect reportedly continued to fight both of them and EMS personnel until the deputies were able to gain control and place the female suspect in handcuffs.

According to the release, the suspect was transported to Piedmont Newton Hospital for treatment and later transported to the Newton County Jail charged with aggravated battery and obstruction of an officer.

Washington said the deputy was treated and released from the hospital and is now at home. She said the investigation is ongoing.
