COVINGTON, Ga. – The Covington Police Department issued citations to employees of eight businesses last week after they allegedly sold alcohol to underage “customers” during a two-day police operation.
According to a news release from Officer Justin Stott, CPD sent two confidential sources under 21 into the 37 retail locations in Covington that are licensed to sell alcohol for off-premises consumption Feb. 13 and Feb. 14 to conduct controlled buys of alcoholic beverages.
Stott said alcohol was sold to the underage sources at eight of the locations.
According to the release, the people who conducted the transactions were cited for selling alcohol to a person under 21. Stott said the violations occurred at:
- Alcovy Liquor - 10117 Alcovy Road
- Kroger - 3139 Highway 278
- Food Depot - 6169 Highway 278
- Dollar General - 6185 Highway278
- Ingles - 7173 Turner Lake Road
- Chevron - 6206 Turner Lake Road
- Beverage Mall - 7254 Washington St.
- Bonds BP - 8145 Washington St.
Stott told The Covington News the violations occurred due to the clerks not checking the purchasers’ ID. He said Ingles and the Chevron on Turner Lake Road were also cited the last time CPD conducted the check.
All but one of the transactions were captured on video.
Stott said the alcohol was photographed and then destroyed.
