Covington Police Department (CPD) arrested a husband and wife Feb. 2 on active warrants out of Jasper County after the male reportedly jumped from a balcony at the America’s Best Motel on Alcovy Road.
According to a police report, CPD was investigating a situation in another part of the motel when a witness told CPD Officer Matt Cooper that a male had jumped from the second-floor balcony and run from the motel. The witness said the male, later identified as Cory Autry, had been staying in room 204.
When Cooper went to room 204, he reportedly spoke with Autry’s wife, Raquel, who told him that her husband fled because he had felony warrants. As officers began to secure a search perimeter, they received calls of a suspicious male running through fields near Williams Road and City Pond Road near the Covington Airport.
According to the report, Lt. Wendell Wagstaff was flagged down by a couple around Oxford Drive, north of the airport. The couple told him they had been approached by a male who “looked out of breath and asked to use the phone.”
Lt. Wagstaff reportedly made contact with the male and determined that he was the subject who had fled the motel. After confirming the warrants, police searched Autry and found small clear baggy containing suspected marijuana. He was handcuffed and transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center.
A check of Raquel Autry reportedly indicated that she was also wanted on an active warrant. She was taken into custody and turned over to Jasper County authorities.
