UPDATE: DPS provides information on morning bus crash

UPDATE (Sept. 18, 3:10 p.m.): According a statement from the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the  crash occurred, at approximately 6:02 a.m., on  Highway 142 near Airport Road. 

The silver Ford Explorer traveling west on Highway 142 crossed the center line striking a Newton County school bus that was traveling east head-on. The driver of the Explorer was ejected. 

The driver was flown to the Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries. The school bus driver was transported to Piedmont Newton Hospital with minor injuries.

COVINGTON, Ga. - According to information from Newton County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Cortney Morrison, Highway 142 is blocked this morning between Stone Road and Airport Road due to a motor vehicle accident involving a school bus and an SUV. 

No children were on the bus at the time of the accident. 

The bus driver was taken to Piedmont Newton Hospital with minor injuries and the driver of the SUV was taken to Atlanta Medical Center by air.
