UPDATE: Hospital gunshot victim identified

UPDATE, (Sept. 16, 5:25 p.m.): The victim has been identified as Jordan Wooten, 21, of Covington. Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis reported the autopsy was completed by the medical examiner's office and the cause of death was gunshot wound and manner is homicide, according to a news release from Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO).

COVINGTON, Ga. - Investigators with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) are investigating the death of a male who was pronounced dead after being dropped off at Piedmont Newton Hospital Thursday afternoon with a gunshot wound.

According to a press release from NCSO spokesperson Sgt. Cortney Morrison, the Covington Police Department (CPD) responded to the hospital after the male was dropped off. Morrison said CPD was able to obtain information that the incident possibly occurred in the county. She said at this time, investigators have not been able to identify the specific location of the crime scene and this is an open, ongoing investigation.

According to the release, the male’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Per Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis, the body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) Crime Lab where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Morrison said the case has been assigned to a team of investigators with the NCSO Criminal Investigation Division (CID). She said as new, factual information is obtained, it will be released.
