The annual Lighting of the Historic Courthouse will begin at 5:15 p.m. Nov. 19, with the lighting taking place at 6 p.m. Cast members of the Covington Regional Ballet’s 2009 production of "The Nutcracker" will escort esteemed guests.

As always, 2009’s local hero or special organization will flip the switch at the lighting. Nominations for lighting must come in the form of a 500 word essay about why that person or group should be selected and must be turned in by 5 p.m. Thursday.

The arrival of Santa Claus and musical performances by the Oxford Singing Children, the Downtown Covington Carolers and the Newton County Community Band also are highlights of the event.

Other activities will include face-painting, Lucy from the Peanuts Comic Strip and rides in Cinderella’s Carriage. Complimentary tickets for the carriage rides are available from downtown merchants. Visits with Santa at his workshop at Ramsey Furniture Company Annex on Clark Street will begin at 6 p.m.

Tickets for holiday events will be available for purchase at the Think Local, Buy Local, Be Local Holiday Tent as well as other special giveaways. The Holiday Elf on the Shelf Treasure Hunt will begin as well as chances to win a Christmas Stocking of Downtown Covington gift certificates.
