FOR KIDS

Get Creative @ the Newton County Library!

School is over! It’s time for reading for fun! It’s time for playing outside and getting creative. And that is the theme for Summer Reading Club at the library — Be Creative @ Your Library. There will be all kinds of creative fun to be had. Learn to knit and make paper beads; you can even learn to make paper. Come to see performances by storytellers, musicians, puppeteers and other creative people. Check out some of our many craft books and do your own thing.

The calendar for Summer Reading Club activities is available on the library’s Web site,www.newtonlibrary.org and in the library. Activities for each week will be published in the newspaper’s calendar of events. Come to the library and check out what’s going on. There will be programs at the Covington Branch Library and at the Newborn Library Service Outlet. We have activities for high school kids and middle school kids as well as preschoolers and elementary school age kids.

In addition to all the shows, storytimes and fun, we will also be doing a reading program, but this year we are letting you set the goal for how many books you want to read. When you have met your goal, you will receive a book of your own to keep and your name will go into a drawing for some nice prizes donated by local merchants and business people. Also, each time you attend a program at the library, you will receive a coupon for different items or some special giveaway items which have been donated to the library.

Read Posters

Maybe you’ve seen celebrities on posters encouraging young people to read, but now staff members have chosen a favorite book to be featured in colorful ‘Read’ posters.  These are displayed in the children’s room to highlight the Summer Reading Club theme of ‘Be Creative @ the Library.’  Come and see what the librarians are reading this summer!

FOR ADULTS

Reader Recommendation

Are you currently reading a library book that you’re just dying to recommend to others?  Just mention this when you return the book to the library and the staff will place a ‘Reader Recommendation’ bookmark in it.  That way, when your neighbors are browsing the shelves, they’ll be able to see that this is a book that gave someone else a lot of enjoyment.  Likewise, you’ll be able to see some choices for future reads that perhaps wouldn’t have occurred to you.

Pick Up & Go

No time to browse?  Do you like to read several books on the same topic?  The library’s staff has done it all for you!  Pick Up & Go bundles of books will be displayed on the Featured Book island near the front door.   Likely topics may include mysteries, romance, travel, suspense, politics, ‘beach reads,’ thrillers and more. The bundles will be labeled for fast and easy selection, enabling you to pop in and out of the library in no time.
