Man identified in Factory Shoals drowning

The victim of the Saturday afternoon drowning at Factory Shoals Park has been identified as 18-year-old Dakota A. Spruill of Newton County.

At approximately 2 a.m. a family member contacted Factory Shoals Park about a missing family member. The attendant referred them to the Newton County Sheriff Office where identification was confirmed, according to NCSO Corporal Anthony Washington.

Around 2 p.m. Saturday calls came in to 911 for help. When emergency personnel arrived at Factory Shoals Park they found an unconscious man being administered CPR. He was transported to Newton Medical Center where he later died.

According to Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown, witnesses told law enforcement officials that the man walked up to a crowd at the park and jumped into the water. He went under but didn't resurface right away. Onlookers pulled the man from the water and began giving CPR.

The investigation into the incident continues.
