City touts Walkers Bend revitalization
Placeholder Image

Covington is trying to turn over a new leaf in Walker’s Bend and is marketing the neighborhood more than ever.

Visitors to Covington’s website, cityofcovington.org, will find a new section called "Covington Cottages." The section contains information on various city neighborhoods that fall in the city’s blighted areas, where Covington is focusing its revitalization efforts.

The city has made Walker’s Bend the center of those efforts, and is partnering with private builders to build dozens of homes, apartments and eventually mixed-use retail and community resource space. Walker’s Bend is located off Washington Street just south of the intersection with Turner Lake Road.

The homes will be two to three-bedroom homes ranging from 800 to 1,200 square feet and will cost $75,000 to $90,000. The homes are designed to be well crafted, well insulated and equipped with energy efficient appliances, to keep utility and maintenance costs down.

Interested homeowners must complete a 16-week financial management and homeownership class in order to be eligible to buy into the neighborhood and become eligible for up to $14,999 in down payment assistance.

For more information visit the website, email info@covingtoncottages.com, which will be monitored by Covington Planning Director Randy Vinson, or call 770-786-7979 or 770-722-6685 to speak to an agent with Hometown Realty.
