Back 2 School block party to be held Sunday

Students of Newton County schools are invited to celebrate the start of the upcoming school year at the annual Back 2 School Downtown Covington Block Party on Aug. 1.

Hosted by Main Street Covington, Washington Street Community Center and over 30 Back 2 School 2010 partners, the free event will be held on the square between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Registration will begin in the Newton County Historic Courthouse at 2:30 p.m.

Students who signed up will receive an arm band which will allow them to receive school supplies that include basic items like notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils and notebook paper at selected locations. Registration closes after all of the wrist bands are distributed. School supplies will be given out at 4:30 p.m.

The block party will feature an array of fun activities like face painting, an interactive science show, a free-throw competition hosted by Newton High School’s basketball team and even Lew-e the Clown will be making an appearance. The MBS Flying Tigers Karate School, Redeeming Love Christian Church, Sojourners Truth & Mr. Pit — The Hip Hop Educational Dog and Springfield Baptist Church will also be performing throughout the festivities.

The event boasts over 30 supporters such as Newton READS; Springfield, Harvest and Bethlehem Baptist churches; the Newton County Farm Bureau; Health Department; Sheriff’s Office (CHAMPS program); Water and Sewage Authority; and Hands on Newton.
