Chemical spill at Nisshinbo

Fire officials have been called to Nisshinbo North America off Ga. Highway 142, after several hundred gallons of hydrogen peroxide spilled out of a container that was being loaded onto a truck.

According to Assistant Fire Marshal Tony Smith, one worker suffered burns to his feet and the lower areas of his legs when the peroxide spilled onto him. He was taken to Grady Hospital by ambulance after the 250-300 gallons spilled onto him. Smith was unsure of how the spill happened or the concentration of the liquid.

"Our crews are containing and taking whatever precautionary measure is needed to secure the area," Smith said.

Although available in most stores, the hydrogen peroxide used for everyday ailments is hyper diluted. In a high concentration it is an oxidizer and skin irritant.
