The RaceWay gas station on U.S. Highway 278 will eventually reopen and the retail store will be demolished and rebuilt, but the company has not yet given a timetable. The station has been vacant since a fire gutted the retail store section in May 2010.

The company decided on a site plan after having a pre-design meeting with Covington building and fire officials Friday. Covington Senior Planner Scott Gaither said Tuesday that the plan called for a new, large 2,800 square-foot retail building to be constructed and for one additional gas pump to be added.

He said the retail store will be made of brick and be more aesthetically pleasing. Raceway officials told him it was part of a new design the company will be using across the country. Conyers-based construction company Madison Industries will be building the store. Gaither said he did not think that the existing gas tanks and pumps would be moved.

Gaither said RaceWay has not yet submitted a demolition permit to the city. The company will also have to send a letter to rail transport company CSX because is planning to do construction near the railroad.

A representative for RaceWay confirmed the new building but said she did not know when construction would start.

The Raceway chain is owned by RaceTrac Petroleum. RaceTrac convenience stores are company owned and operated, while RaceWay stores are leased to a third party operators, according to the company’s website.
