A Covington man who resigned last week as principal at the Alpha Academy, Rockdale County Public Schools’ program for students with disciplinary issues, is being considered for charges of sexual battery after allegations of inappropriate behavior arose from a student.

Rockdale County Superior Court Chief Judge David Irwin is considering whether to issue the warrant for Greg Brown, who had been principal of the Alpha Academy since 2009. Brown resigned effective Feb. 27.

According to a Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office report, the 13-year-old student said her discomfort began in September, shortly after she arrived at the Alpha Academy. The student alleged Brown had walked her to the side of the building while asking what she had done over the weekend. "She told Mr. Brown she had been on a date. She said Mr. Brown said, ‘No baby, I don’t want you going out with these boys. You’re my baby girl!," according to the report.

The student tried to walk away, but Brown allegedly pulled her in and told her to give him a hug. She gave him a side hug and he allegedly told her to give a frontal hug. "(The student) said Mr. Brown ‘rubbed’ her across his chest."

Other incidents described included an inappropriate search of the student’s back pockets and a statement during a parent/principal conference with the student’s mother. According to the student, Brown said to her mother, "(She) is my baby girl. If you don’t want her, she can live with me. I will buy a bigger house and have her room ready and I can take care of her."

The report also described a handshake where Brown allegedly took his index finger to rub the center of her hand. A teacher witnessing the handshake reportedly broke it up and told the student to go to the bus. The reporting deputy wrote, "Once I obtained a statement from (the teacher) she explained she did so because it was just her motherly instinct."

Brown reportedly told deputies he was trying to mentor the student, due to her troubled past, and attended her softball game to show support. "Mr. Brown was adamant that he did not do anything wrong and he never hugged (the student) in an inappropriate fashion."

Brown submitted a letter of resignation on Feb. 26, writing, "It is with heavy heart that I am formally requesting release from my contract effective February 27, 2014. This decision to request release is very difficult for my family and I, but after considering the family issues we are experiencing at this time, we feel it would be in our best interest to request this release.

"I greatly appreciate the opportunity given to me to serve the Rockdale County community and pray for the continued success of the district."

Brown was previously the assistant principal at Alpha from 2008-2009, and assistant principal at Pine Street Elementary from 2007-2008. He came to RCPS from the Miami/Dade County School system.

Judge Irwin is considering the request for the warrant, which must be issued by a Superior Court judge when it involves school administrators.
