Boasting the claim of the best pie crust in town, Billy Oakes and his brother, Ray, have opened the newest pizza parlor in town - Pizza Plus.

"It's going to be some of the best pizza you ever ate, especially when it comes to the crust," Oakes said.

Open for several weeks now, Pizza Plus is located in the former premises of the Pizza Inn on Ga. Highway 81. Local residents might be familiar with Oakes who has operated two restaurants - The Oakes Family Diner and Betty's Country Cooking - in Rockdale County for 30 years.

Oakes said the decision to go into the pizza business was made when the restaurant space became available.

"I love it," Oakes said of the pizza business. "The people and the food are just excellent."

The specialty pie of the restaurant is their Who-Ray Special. Named as a play on words of the brothers' first names, the pizza is covered with 10 toppings: pepperoni, beef, ham, sausage, extra cheese, green and black olives, onions, mushrooms and green bell peppers.

Oakes said the motivation in inventing the Who-Ray Special, which comes with a special Who-Ray sauce, was to one-up supreme-style pizza. The Who-Ray Special has quickly become a top seller he said.

"We make our own crust," Oakes said. "This is the best secret in town."

Other specialty pizzas include the Super Meat Special, the All Veggie Special. Buffalo Pizza, Potato Pizza (potatoes, bacon, ranch and cheddar cheese) and BBQ Pizza (chicken, onions, cilantro and barbecue sauce). Specialty pies are $18.99 for a jumbo, $16.99 for a large, $14.99 for a medium and $6.99 for an individual.

Chicken wings in mild, spicy, barbecue, teriyaki or lemon pepper sauce, are sold in five piece orders ($3.99) 10 piece orders ($6.99) and 50 piece orders ($29.99). Chicken tenders, cheese sticks and breadsticks are sold as well. Special salads ranging in price from $2.99 to $6.99 include an Italian salad, a Greek salad, a Caesar salad and a gyro salad.

Hot Oven Grinders, oven roasted sandwiches, can be made on a hoagie or in a tortilla wrap and come in hot Italian, American club, meatball and chicken varieties among others. All sandwiches are $5.99. Gyros (steak or chicken pita bread with tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomatoes and onions) are $4.99

In addition to pizza and salad, on the buffet bar there is chili, soup, potato salad, pasta, banana pudding and yellow cake - a sheet cake cooked in the pizza oven that comes in several different sizes. Oakes said the potato salad and yellow cake are particularly popular with customers.

The buffet is $5.99 for lunch and dinner. Children ages 3-12 can eat for $3.99 and children ages 2 and under can eat for $1.99.
