First Newton County prep swimmers compete

Eastside swimmers Drew Ellwanger and Nijyl Chavis competed in their first high school meet on Nov. 13.

Both competitors made the state championship qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ellwanger recorded a 1:00.79, while Chavis finished at 1:05.53. (State time is 1:08.5.)

In addition, Ellwanger also qualified in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:09.30.

It should be noted that Ellwanger and Chavis are the first high school competitive swimmers to represent Newton County.

Their next swim meet will be held Dec. 1 at Johnson Park.

TURKEY BOWL CLASSIC

The 2007 Turkey Bowl Classic III will continue at 2:30 p.m. today featuring the GCC Cougars against the Henry Falcons at Avalon Park in McDonough.

The division is middle school eighth grade football. The head coach of the Cougars is Sylvester Elkins.

Fifteen players represent Griffin, while four are from Conyers and four are from Covington. One player represents Hampton, while another is from Stockbridge.

At 2:30 p.m. Saturday the Cougars will do battle against the Macon Titans.

Upcoming camp programs

The Newton County Recreation Commission has several upcoming camp programs, which will all be held at the Turner Lake Complex.

The daily activities will occur during the week-long school holidays for ages 6-12. Each camp begins at 8 a.m. and lasts until 6 p.m.

The Christmas camp is the next program, which will be held December 17-21. The mid-winter camp is February 18-22, while the spring break camp is April 7-11.

Each weekly camp costs $65 per child and is limited to the first 100 registered children.
