After helping the Eagles to their third win of the season last Friday against Madison County, Eastside running back Jomandi Smith has been named the Eastside Athlete of the Week.
Smith's career may have began later than most on the gridiorn, but his hard work has paid off for the Eagles who sit 1-1 in their region.
"I started playing in seventh grade," Smith said. "I wanted to play earlier, but my (family) thought I was too small. They finally let me play and I turned out to be pretty good."
Against the Red Raiders, Smith carried the ball 18 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help the Eagles to a 31-14 victory.
Smith said that his favorite part of paying football came from the family aspect that his team provides.
"When we get out here we are just a big family," he said. "We come together and really play as a team."
As the season hits its stride in October, Smith has been plans for the Eagles and beyond.
"I really hope we can take the team to states," he said. "I also want to continue playing in college."
