For the third straight season, the Alcovy girls’ basketball team finished its region season unbeaten, and was once again rewarded for its efforts.

Ashley Williams was named Region 2-AAAAAA Player of the Year for her efforts in leading the Lady Tigers to a 19-6 overall record during her senior season.

Williams signed a letter of intent to Alabama, where she will bring her talents honed at Alcovy throughout the last four seasons.

Fellow Southeastern Conference signee, Meagan Tucker was named to the All-Region’s first team.

Alcovy’s Lakeiyah Sorrells was named to the second team and Kaci Palo as an honorable mention member.

Alcovy earned a No. 1 seed in the region tournament, earning a bye through Tuesday’s first round and an automatic spot into the state playoffs. The Lady Tigers will play the winner of Lovejoy and Luella Friday at 8 p.m. The Lady Tigers were region champions in the regular season last year before falling in the league’s championship game.

Alcovy made its way through the state playoffs to the semifinal round, where it eventually fell to state champion Miller Grove at the Gwinnett Arena.

Also earning a spot onto the All-Region team was Newton junior Precious Price. The Lady Rams finished the regular season 15-5 with a 7-3 region mark, earning a spot as the second seed, facing Druid Hills Tuesday night.
The Newton boys’ basketball team placed senior Rashard Cabane on the All-Region first team after his performance as the Rams’ most reliable player.

Cabane averaged 12 points, seven rebounds, 1.6 steals and 66 charges throughout 25 games this season. Jalen Glover was named to the second All-Region team, after putting up 11.5 points, five rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

The Rams earned the fifth seed in the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament, facing Morrow at 4:30 p.m. tonight. The winner will advance to, not only a berth in the state playoffs, but also to face No. 1 seed Rockdale. Alcovy entered the region tournament as the seventh seed, facing Lovejoy at 7:30 p.m. today.
