Discover Point Church may soon be looking at a new home in the building that formerly housed a movie theater on Ga. Highway 138.

Discover Point has been looking to purchase the building since it went into foreclosure about four years ago while it housed Crusade Dominion Church. Discover Point Church was originally outbid by a group of doctors/investors but is finally under contract to purchase the building from the doctor/investor group for about $675,000, said head pastor Philip Lehman. They hope to close on the purchase in December and begin construction and renovations on the building, which comprises about 25,000 square feet on four acres of property.

The church is no stranger to nontraditional spaces for worship. Since it started in 2005, it had held services at Carmike Cinemas and Peachtree Academy before leasing its current space at 1303 Parker Road. The congregation now has more than 300 members, said Lehman.

“When you’re looking for a place to worship, there’s two things people desire,” said Lehman. “No. 1 is location. No. 2 is parking. There’s almost 300 parking spots there.”

The church plans to return to the sloped floors, keep the theater style seats and open up the parking lot in its renovations of the property on Ga. Highway 138, which is next to Arby’s and across from LA Fitness.

“Our plans are to open up this facility, for people that drive through to Firehouse Subs. … We don't want to close the community out.” Lehman described the church’s worship style as “unchurchy.”

“It’s just a very comfortable environment.”

Discover Point will continue worship services at its 1303 Parker Road location with services at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and noon. For more information, go to discoverpointchurch.com.
